I’m a life-long learner and self starter who loves reading and applying principles of personal development and leadership. I carry out my life based on a core set principles and values (PVs). To me defining our PVs i.e. our beliefs is the most important part of knowing who we are. They outline our “Why” in life, and when we then say and do what we believe we are representing an invaluable characteristic that all human beings should own, authenticity. I truly believe that life isn’t that complex, it’s quite simple in fact, but what we need to do is first understand ourselves to be successful. By knowing who we are at the core (granted certain things might change over time, that’s why constant self-reflection is important) we understand the areas in life which we are most likely to succeed or fail in. We start succeeding once we know our strengths and weaknesses and get involved in activities that play to our strengths. I constantly put myself out of my comfort zone as it helps me discover my interests. Following up with reflection helps me solidify to me what I’m good and bad at. This simple repetitive process helped me figure out my purpose in life.
At this point, I have identified certain strengths and interests that include effectively communicating complex concepts in simple terms. I have understood that I’m analytical, systems driven and love to work with people and build strong meaningful relationships. I love to build things, optimize and automate them to be as efficient and effective as they can be (this realization built a strong interest in building high-value businesses), to me there's no point in doing something for the sake of doing it, do your best if you have committed. I don't take life the way it is, I always believe we can push the current boundaries for a better world. When I look back on my life it all makes sense based on the activities I engaged in, a science degree, personal training, entrepreneurial ventures etc.
A snapshot of my decisions:
Growing up I wanted to pursue a career in Finance and Accounting, it's all I ever knew; my family is primarily in business and finance. However, a chance event put me in a biology class in gr.11 high school and after two weeks fell in love with the science. In grade 12 I took a hybrid of courses from science, math to economics to see If I wanted to pursue finance/economics or science in university; I chose science - Molecular Biology and Medicinal Chemistry to be exact. I figured I can always teach myself the business/finance/economics but to do so with science would be harder. In university and beyond I went on to continue this same diversification of experiences and skills. As a big picture thinker, diversity of thought is a massive asset for me. Yes, I was formally trained in the sciences though I performed in business case competitions, learned how to build websites & code a little, mentored youths, became a personal trainer, conducted cancer research, consulted in commercial strategy for businesses, interned at Ontario's leading center for entrepreneurship (MaRS Discovery District), worked in startups, backpacked through Europe, started my own company & more.
I see myself as a connector, one who can traverse different disciplines enough to be able to bridge them together. I.e. Medical Science with commercial opportunities & advanced technologies. I believe multi-disciplinary skill sets are the key to succeeding in the future of work.
I like to highlight this because to me it's important to experience life fully, to not be complacent, and to get out of your comfort zone. This is who I am, this is what I do and why I do it. The only way I will know what I like and don't like is by giving it a shot. I want zero regrets when I'm on my death bed.
Mastery of myself will be life long journey, and while doing so I want to help others identify and learn the same lessons I know today. I do not claim not be any sort of master, in fact I am far far from it. I just hope that the lessons I have learned till this point and moving forward as I update my blogs/ social media platforms/other will provide value to people.
